When it comes to BBQ joints they are hard to top from the Southern US states like Alabama and Georgia. When it comes to BBQ joints in Canada, they are few and far between. Luckily in Calgary we have a couple that are serving up southern style BBQ. We had an opportunity to try Holy Smoke BBQ and it was good.
We visited the location on Manhattan Road SE in Calgary at what would be the last place you would expect to see a BBQ restaurant. It is lite industrial all around and not your first thought when you think “hey we should go for some BBQ!”
They have all the standards like pulled pork, beef brisket and smoked chicken as well as all the sides you’d expect like coleslaw, macaroni and potato salad and baked beans. This go round I went with the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw and the macaroni salad. They have several delicious BBQ sauces as well. From the vinegary southern style, to the spicy northern style. All of which can be sampled as a dip or poured generously on your sandwich.
There is limited seating and you may end up sitting at a communal table with other guests, but when it comes to BBQ, we’re all friends right!
I give Holy Smoke BBQ, 4 bacons out of 5.
